The longer you stare at the mountain, the more it seems a refuge above human borders and distinctions and this constant dialogue of violence. Up there, he’d hoped, he and Sophie could step away from trouble for a while”…words from the new novel by Steven Heighton – Every Lost Country. The book tells the story of Lewis Book, a doctor with a history of embroiling himself in conflicts, and his daughter, Sophie, who travel to Nepal to join a climbing expedition and find themselves taken prisoner with a group of Tibetan refugees fleeing Chinese soldiers…From one of Canada’s finest writers comes a literary page-turner of the highest order. Inspired by an actual event, Every Lost Country is a gripping novel about heroism, human failings, and what love requires. When is it acceptable to be a bystander, and when do life and loyalty demand more? Steven Heighton joined us live in studio back in May to discuss the book and we’ll revisit that conversation today.

Sometime around 8 a.m. on December 10, 2007, police in Mississauga, ON responded to a 911 call from a man who had said he had just killed his daughter. When officers arrived, they found 16-year-old Aqsa Parvez suffering from life-threatening injuries. She later died in hospital. Now the fate of this young Muslim woman and three others is explored in depth in the world television premiere of the two-hour Original CTV Documentary IN THE NAME OF THE FAMILY, which airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET on CTV. Emmy® Award-winning filmmaker Shelley Saywell continues her list of hard-hitting films that deal with human rights issues with a documentary that puts a very human face the harrowing circumstances estimated to claim the lives of 5,000 women around the world every year. Selected to screen at Hot Docs earlier this year, the film was awarded the 2010 Hot Docs Best Canadian Feature, marking the second time Saywell has earned that Hot Docs distinction. Shelley Saywell will join us to talk about the film.

The Canadian Chautaugua was established in early 19th Century as an offshoot of the original Chautauqua literary and arts group in upstate New York. Starting in the 1920s, The Muskoka Assembly, a branch of the Canadian Chautaugua, would convene in the summers at an island resort on Lake Rousseau in Muskoka. Such poets as Bliss Carmen and Charles G.D. Roberts were honoured guests. And Chautaugua members enjoyed poetry readings, plays and outdoor activity. The Great Depression however put an end to the group. Though, now, some 80 years after its demise, a group of Muskoka artists is reviving the Chautaugua tradition. One of those traditions is the Muskoka Chautaugua Reading Circle, a selection of Must Read books by Canadian authors. One of the first honorees of the new Reading Circle is “Canoe Lake”, a novel by Roy Macgregor. MacGregor’s Canoe Lake is based on the life, times, and romances of the great naturalist artist Tom Thompson and the rumour that just before his mysterious death, he fathered an illegitimate child. This past August the Muskoka Chautaugua invited Roy Macgregor to share his memories of Tom Thompson’s life and world and the research that went into both the novel Canoe Lake and his soon-to-be published non-fiction book on Tom Thompson…we’ll hear highlights from that talk this morning.

Each year, more than 3,500 women are treated at the Panzi Hospital, located in Bukavu, – a tiny fraction of the women who experience sexual assault. The DRC is thought to have the highest incident of rape in the world. Rape is a commonly used weapon of war by armed gangs in the decades-long conflict which has ravaged the region.
