Alternative Radio: from African Music to "Vinyl from the Crypt"
CIUT.FM is a listener-supported radio station rooted in the University of Toronto community that broadcasts alternative music and spoken word programming, including the award-winning news program, "Democracy Now!". CIUT provides content that is as diverse as the city of Toronto, with over 70 different programs - Celtic music, hip hop, underground music, salsa, indie rock, hardcore punk - the beat goes on.
CIUT is available through 4 different mediums: FM Radio at 89.5, Rogers Digital Cable channel 946, StarChoice Satellite channel 826, and Internet www.CIUT.fm.
Programming highlights to be featured in the weeks ahead can be found on our Home page, or sign up for our mailing list and we'll keep you up to date on all our music programming and events news:
As our mission statement outlines, we exist to provide an alternative to mainstream media, to provide community access to the airwaves, and to offer programming that reflects the diverse elements of the listening community from Cobourg to Kitchener, and Buffalo to Barrie.
To achieve these objectives, we draw on the wide-ranging talents and global interests of students, faculty and community members, and provide opportunities for volunteers to learn about and participate in radio-related activities.
Above all, CIUT 89.5FM exists to serve its listeners. We seek to stimulate, educate, entertain and challenge our audiences, and to meet listener needs that are not currently addressed by other broadcast media.
Whether that need is African or Celtic music, indie rock or salsa, contemporary dance or funk, hip hop or hardcore, CIUT 89.5FM has a program to fit the bill. Check out our Alternative Radio Program Schedule and stream the podcasts that expose non-commercial music, groundbreaking research at U of T, and the views you don't hear on mainstream media.
